Ali’s Ever Growing Bucket List

In the summer of 2010 I was working my 15th year in technology, feeling burnt out and pretty middle aged.

If you’d told me then that in the few years to follow I would; face and survive stage IV colon cancer, publish 2 books that prepare and inspire others to fight this disease, become a sports photographer with a highlight of covering David Beckham’s final US match at the 2012 MLS Cup, write and perform over 30 original songs, I would’ve thought you were some kind of twisted Tony Robbins wannabe, but this has been my life to date and it has been amazing.

So after all that, what’s next? Knock some items off the ever growing bucket list, that’s what:

  1. Explore Ireland – check, check, check and…
  2. “Record a full length CD from my original songs.” – check
  3. Perform my song “Positano” at the Festa del Pesce in Positano, Italy – check
  4. Jump out of a plane/skydive – check (and never ever again)
  5. Launch and manage a band – check (www.thebastardsonsofnedgiblin.com)
  6. Be a guest on a radio show/podast – check, check and check
  7. Explore Isla Mujeres, Mexico – check
  8. Road Trip Scotland – check
  9. See the Aurora Borealis – check
  10. Go river rafting with Timber Jim Serrill (legendary mascot for the Portland Timbers MLS team) – Scheduled for Spring, 2016
  11. Perform at the White Horse Sessions at Kenny’s in Lahinch, Ireland
  12. Write a screenplay
  13. Swim with Whale Sharks (in Belize?)
  14. Sing with Bo and Bear Rinehart from NeedToBreathe.
  15. Go on a ride-along with firemen
  16. Learn to play the bagpipes
  17. Go ice fishing and “snow machining” with my friends (Serg and Anne) who moved to Minnesota
  18. Be a contestant on a game show
  19. Visit Miriam and the boys at their summer camp in France
  20. Photograph a match at the 2016 European Championships
  21. Sit in a movie theatre with my friends and watch a film with one of my songs in it
  22. Play a cameo/bit part in an Indie film or TV show
  23. Spend a couple weeks at a health spa (ok, fat camp)
  24. Learn to play the cello
  25. Go for a walk with Ricky Gervais
  26. Drink Tequila and cuss with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
  27. Explore the other 2/3d’s of the planet/scuba dive – AKA get over fear of sharks
  28. Own property
  29. Own stock
  30. Go on a Treasure Hunt
  31. Ride a camel and explore the Pyramids of Egypt
  32. Race a Car Across the Bonneville Salt Flats
  33. Explore Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands
  34. Island Hop and Explore the Ancient Ruins of Greece
  35. Go Dog Sledding in the Canadian Rockies
  36. Spend the night in a haunted castle or hotel
  37. Catch a Big Fish and have a great chef make a dish from it
  38. Go Vampire/Werewolf Hunting in Transylvania
  39. River Raft the Grand Canyon
  40. Drive around the east coast in the fall, watch the leaves change
  41. Wade through the Sea of Stars – Maldives
  42. Trace the family roots to its best story, then travel to meet distant relations and soak in their culture (Scotland, Ireland, France, Holland, Bohemia)
  43. Travel to places I’ve never been and record singles of my original music with musicians I’ve yet to meet
  44. Make millions of people less afraid of cancer and better prepared to face it
